We had a great week in Preschool, even though it was short! We learned about Queenie Quail and celebrated Valentine’s Day.
On Monday, we listened to the story Olive, My Love on CD. Today we celebrated Valentine’s Day. Conor N. brought in the Estimation Jar, filled with 71 Trios.
Using candy conversation hearts, they graphed the colors of their boxed hearts and then had a free paint with valentine colors, red, purple, and pink.
At 10:00 we started our party. The boys and girls passed out their valentines to their classmates and finished the day by singing our new Alphabet song, “Who Let the Letters Out?” Then it was time to go home!! Thank you to the Martinus family for the delicious cupcake treat and Isaac G.’s grandma who provided the juice. And a big thank you to all who sent in darling valentines, homemade goodies, and treats for all! Thank you also for all the teacher Valentine’s candy, we appreciated the thoughtfulness.
On Wednesday we read our class book, What Pet to Get? Each child received a copy of this book, and they liked seeing what their classmates drew. The letter “Q” was introduced along with her sound and motion. In Religion we finished our last page of our creation book, “God Created Me.” These will be assembled and sent home in a few weeks. We also cut out Queenie Quail for our “Q” page and added eyes, beak and feather. Nathan brought in the Estimation Jar filled with 214 Starbursts!
Nadia Henry brought in Quaker Oats Bars for our Queenie Quail snack. Thank You Henry Family!
We had a young visitor come and observe us and what Preschool 4’s look like in action. His name was Logan and he is very excited to come to our school next fall!
We ended our day with a lot of time to play outside together!
Friday: No School …have a great long Weekend!
Notes:
Special Person of the Week: Avery Plachecki (see her All About Me info below)
Kindergarten Round-up information is attached to the Viking’s View. Please respond as soon as possible so you can get the time slot you wish. We will not have Preschool that day!
Lenten crosses will go home next Wednesday with directions for a special family activity to be returned to school on Friday, Feb 24th.
Ash Wednesday: Please plan on joining us for our first Mass with the big school! I am sure this is going to be a little daunting for the students, especially since they will be receiving Ashes with the rest of the school. I will talk to them briefly about Lent and the Ashes, but it would be wonderful if you could prepare them ahead of time as well.
“Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent. It occurs 40 days (not counting Sundays) before Easter. As Catholics, we attend mass on this day. Ashes are placed on the forehead in the sign of a cross as a sign of repentance. Ashes typically are gathered from the burning of the previous year's palms from Palm Sunday.”
I will be reading them a book next week Fill a Bucket so they can understand they have an “invisible” bucket that is important to everyone. They can fill it up by doing good deeds such as saying “please” and “thank you”, or by saying prayers to Jesus. Our buckets hold all the love and happiness that we receive each day. How do we fill other people’s buckets? And how do we empty out our friend’s buckets by not sharing, playing or caring? This will be a continuous Lenten theme. Each time we see one of the children doing an extra-ordinary good deed, they will be able to put a ball in our bucket and…when it is full, I will bring in a treat!
Book in a Bag will begin on Friday February 24th. A note with directions will go home next week. Your child will receive a book in their school bag. Our intention is for this book to be read with someone at home before the next school day. When it is sent back to school, your child will receive a new book. We will continue to rotate the books through the class.
Estimation Jar will resume next Wednesday.
We will continue learning about the letter “Q” so we have no special snack needed next week.

We had a fun week in Preschool. We celebrated with our Valentine’s Party!
On Tuesday we listened to the book, Olive My Love CD. We were introduced to our new Zoo friend, Jerry Jellyfish and practiced his motion. We sang our ABC’s and counted to ten. We continued learning about shapes, today- they drew a square and cut out a square for their shape book. We also looked around the room for squares and found several of them.
We celebrated Valentine’s Day today. They painted using the colors red, pink, and purple. At 10:00, we started our party with delicious home-made “circle” cookies and yummy red jello “hearts” which connected perfectly with learning our shapes, and of course Valentine’s Day! Thank you Sova Family! We also enjoyed delicious juice boxes from the Dunlap Family. Thank you! They then took turns passing out their valentines to their classmates. They were so well-behaved and polite. Mrs. Slomski even paid them a visit, delivering suckers for all!
Thank you to all the parents who sent in such nice Valentine’s candy to the teachers. We all appreciate the thoughtfulness. Fun day for all! We ended our day doing a new version of the Bean Bag Boogie.
On Thursday, we read along and sang the song “Five Green and Speckled Frogs.” For one of our activities, they each had a chance to go into the Scissor Pool. It is a fun way to encourage scissor and fine motor skills. The boys and girls sit in a kiddie pool full of different kinds of paper and practice cutting. We also did our second page of the shape book, square objects! The boys and girls had a choice of making a square dog or a square truck. They were introduced to our Zoo friend, Kayo Kangaroo and learned his motion.
We ended our day with another new fun song, “Tooty ta!”
