Welcome to Kindergarten!

Kindergarten K-news
for Mrs. Sova on Friday, February 17, 2012
We had a wonderful, short week filled with lots of fun. On Monday and Tuesday, we celebrated Valentine’s Day. Thank you for sending in your child’s Valentine cards. We enjoyed a fun party and I was grateful for getting my bucket filled by cards and delicious treats. Thank you to the Edelyn’s (for yummy mini-cupcakes and treat bags), the Beale’s (for paper products), and Fabiano’s (for drinks). Wednesday and Thursday was filled with celebrating Dental Health Month. We talked about taking care of our teeth, made teeth puppets, and made a class book about losing our teeth. We also enjoyed our field trip to the Children’s Museum, where we played with the dental exhibit and the many other fun things they have there. Thank you to Mrs. Cottrell, Mrs. Marosi, Mrs. Dakki, and Mrs. Radgens for chaperoning the field trip!
VOLUNTEERS:
Our Library reader is (Monday, 8:10-8:40)... Tim O'Rourke (2/27)
Our next zoo friend is kayo kangaroo. Wednesday "Kk" snack volunteer... the Cummings family
This week:
- In Reading this week we read books about Valentine’s Day and wrote in the Valentine rose cards we made by printing the inside of stalks of celery. Then we read about teeth and made a mini-book about kinds of teeth that used our new sight word for the week: little. Ask your child to read it to you!
- For Math we practiced writing our numbers 1-20. We played a game with dice that counted different colors of candy hearts. We counted sets of coins left on pillows by the tooth fairy, too.
-
In Religion we talked about how Jesus taught us the way to pray. We discussed that while we generally point our folded hands to heaven, there are many different positions you can pray in. We practiced doing both formal and spontaneous prayers from our hearts. We broke the Lord’s Prayer down into more kindergarten-friendly language as well.
-
For Social Studies, we participated in National Kindness month (February) by making Valentine books marks to give to our 4th grade Prayer Partners. We read a story about giving "warm fuzzies" and "cold pricklies" and connected it to our bucket-filling, how we treat others, and Jesus' teachings as well.
-
In science, we talked about Dental Health month (the month of February)! It was fun to play with the exhibit on dental health at the Children's Museum. There we got to look at x-rays, practice taking some, and play with some dental "equipment." We talked a lot about loose tooth - something many kinder-kids can identify with and how to take care of our teeth by brushing, flossing, visiting the dentist, and eating healthy foods.
Our V.I.P. this week was Drew Sova. Drew brought in pictures of his family and showed us the Buzz Lightyear toy he got for his 5th birthday. He brought in the Baptismal gown that he wore for his baptism and put Batman in the Surprise Box. His mom and his sister also came in to read to us. We love Drew !!
Next up... Kate Passinault (Since the next couple of weeks only have 4 days, we will wait to learn about Kate until our next full week of school)
Coming up...
* We will be going to Ash Wednesday all-school mass this Wednesday, February 22
* If your child would like white milk at morning snack for the rest of the year it is not too late. Please send $5 to school.
* There is no school on Friday, Feb. 17 or Monday, Feb. 20.
* There will be no school on Friday, March 9 for teacher in-service and Wednesday, March 21 for Kindergarten Round-up.
Please be sure to send your child to school with appropriate coats, hats, and gloves/mittens and boots when necessary. We go outside as often as we can! Be sure to bring snow gear on Tuesdays and Thursdays (unless your child is an All-Day friend. They need their gear every day). CHECK THE WEATHER REPORTS!!
Have a wonderful weekend! ~ Carrie Sova
